From Forests to Beaches, History and Culture – What Would You Do in England?

For so long, England has been a country of extensive history, culture, heritage and wonder. There is much to see and more to do in England and the true beauty of the country cannot be taken in within a mere one day. However, if you are pressed for time and you need to have an English experience, this gem of Europe has a lot to accommodate your plans.

The most important thing to decide when you are taking a short break in England is to decide where you want to go and what sites you specifically want to see. The country is large and diverse in its activities and sites of interest. Therefore in order to manage your time efficiently, you must decide where exactly you want to go and what you would like to experience.

If you are considering a beach holiday, you have a myriad of options to choose from. The coasts and beaches of England are beautiful and well worth a visit. You can spend countless hours tip toeing over rocks or slurping an ice cream at a pier in a waterfront town wreathed in history and legend. Cornwall is a popular beach destination in England, with jaw dropping scenery, magnificent cliffs and quaint fishing villages. Whitby, in North Yorkshire is another beautiful beach town with a rugged coastline, full of Gothic charm. If you want to break away from the beach scene and take a walk through the moors and hike up the hills, England offers you many places to suit your fancy. Cumbria is the ultimate destination for walkers and adventure lovers. There is plenty to see and do in this beautiful Lake District which is home to the wonderful Lake Windermere. If you are in the mood to explore some legends of King Arthur and listen to local folklore and yarn, Somerset is the most ideal place for you. Better yet, if you want to spend the day trudging through the seclusion of a forest, the Forest of Dean is ideal. Named the first national park in England, the Forest of Dean is a hotspot for excellent trekking and mountain biking. However, if you want a taste of history and architecture, make your way to Stratford-Upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s home. Or maybe pay a visit to Windsor Castle, England’s largest occupied castle and the Queen’s favorite summer home. Better yet, head to Oxford and visit the Ashmolean Museum which features artworks from the great Michelangelo, Picasso and Leonardo Da Vinci. Maybe if you are in the mood for some gory history, visit Canterbury and be acquainted with the bloody back drop of Chaucer’s tales.

However, the joy of England’s urban settlements is the energy and reinvention. Live music, great dancing and performances, theatre and cuisine are some of the greatest joys in English cities. Liverpool, Nottingham and Birmingham are some of the most popular cities in England. With extensive histories and many activities suitable for the whole family, a visit to any of these cities is worthwhile.
